I missed catching the Grates down at South by Southwest last Spring but the buzz was that they put on a good show. So when I saw the band lip synching & shimmying along to the Violent Femmes "Add it Up" in the packed back room of Pianos before their set started I had a feeling it was gonna be on.

This was an awesome show. The Australian band plays mostly short punky songs and aren't afraid to have fun while performing. Guitarist John Patterson & Drummer Alana Skyring provided the jerky rhythms while Singer Patience Hodgson jumped, laughed, and joked with the crowd throughout the set. The highlight was when Patience parted the crowd like Moses to perform a song in the middle of the room while doing some wild Cirque De Soleil style tricks with a ribbon. The crowd seemed to be into the tunes overall - "Science is Golden" got a big response & I particularly enjoyed "Inside Outside".

the Grates are touring all over so check 'em out when they come your way.

That sux Joly, I didn't realize the manager stopped you. Doesn't make any sense - its just more exposure for the bands.
