I first caught the Living Things in the dingy basement of Lit and was totally blown away - straight up rock wih an actual message, delivered with a lot of intensity. I caught two more shows later in the week and each one was just as good. One song in particular "Bombs Below" is just amazing. Can't wait to hear the album. This was my fourth Libertines show. They're one of my favourite bands on Earth and sounded pretty great - but without Pete D, its like crack without the pipe. It was a long day of music and I was tanked by the time they went on but I think even the Strokes would have to admit they phoned this one in. Of course, being sandwiched between living legends like the New York Dolls and Iggy Pop in front of thousands of jaded garage rock fans is a tough gig for any band and there was a hurricane rapidly approaching the island. It was definitely good, just not the classic their shows at Mercury Lounge and Roseland had been. Julian sipped champagne, jumped into the crowd and mixed it up a bit a couple of times and gave a classy acknowledgement to Little Steven and the other bands that had played. Anyway, even on an “off” night though the Strokes easily whop most other bands song for song “Barely Legal”, “Meet me in the Bathroom”, “Hard to Explain”- what’s fucking with that?
