08-14 The Strokes on Randalls Island
It was a long day of music and I was tanked by the time they went on but I think even the Strokes would have to admit they phoned this one in. Of course, being sandwiched between living legends like the New York Dolls and Iggy Pop in front of thousands of jaded garage rock fans is a tough gig for any band and there was a hurricane rapidly approaching the island. It was definitely good, just not the classic their shows at Mercury Lounge and Roseland had been. Julian sipped champagne, jumped into the crowd and mixed it up a bit a couple of times and gave a classy acknowledgement to Little Steven and the other bands that had played. Anyway, even on an “off” night though the Strokes easily whop most other bands song for song “Barely Legal”, “Meet me in the Bathroom”, “Hard to Explain”- what’s fucking with that?
Side note: In my all time lowest concert photog moment, I was so bombed and hyped up by this point that I dove into the mosh pit and forgot to take pictures when the Stooges came out even though I was standing about 20 feet from the stage. They were amazing and completely blew away everybody as usual. The view from the middle of the pit was awesome.
By the way, I hate outdoor shows - gimme a smoky basement anytime.
