I first caught Man Man at an Ace Fu records party during CMJ and they were the best band of the night & totally blew me away. Tonight at Mercury they were even better. The blues / cabaret jazz experiments of Beefheart or Waites immediately jump to mind but Man Man weave enough of their own blend of subtle instrumentation & surreal lyricism to avoid sounding derivative. Their CD actually captures the band's intense sound pretty well but they're great performers and are even better live. Definitely worth checking out.

Finally a show that was actually fun. I’m addicted to EODM's new album "Peace, Love, & Death Metal" which is all shake your ass rock – no actual death metal. It’s loaded with killer songs and their cover "Speaking in Tounges", "I Only Want You", "stuck in the metal", etc. are pure magic. This live set was even better. The quality of the music shows the band definitely take their sound seriously but also with a sense of humor that comes through live (they dedicated every song to “the ladies”). By the final song there were smiles and dancing all around.
