One of highlights of the monthly Shindig! indie rock party was Brooklyn's Jaguar Club playing an entertaining set of eighties influenced indie-pop. The band's sound is a bit too restrained at times on their latest EP "Ceci n'est pas le Club de Jaguar" but in the live setting singer William Popadic infuses the songs with an immediacy that drew a enthusiastic response from the partygoers. Jaguar Club's definitely a band with significant potential for fans of brooding, melodic indie.

I've seen Chinese Stars a couple of times before but for whatever reason the crowds were kinda dead and the band seemed to be holding back a bit. Well, closing out the night at the open bar monthly indie-rock jam Shindig! the after-hours crowd and a fired up Chinese Stars were both in top form with singer Eric Paul diving into the crowd rolling on the floor with the booze filled partiers shouting and screaming along for more of the jerky rhythmns. An absolutely perfect end to a fun night - the Chinese Stars killed.

The Chainsaw Trio kicked off Shindig! with an intense set of bluesy, soul influenced Rock & Roll. The crowd started off pretty small but filled up steadily song by song as the band gained momentum with each tune. The songs and performance were of an unusually high quality overall and left the crowd buzzing positively afterwards. The Chainsaw Trio are definitely worth catching live if you're into quality bluesy indie like the John Spencer, Reigning Sound, or the Black Keys.

I've been keepin' an eye on the Blue Van ever since I caught them delivering a crunching blast of old school hard rock at Southpaw in Brooklyn a while back. The Danish band is heavily influenced by 60's Brit-rock classics (i.e. any band Clapton was in) and in less capable hands it might come off as played out retro Boomer-Candy (like so many other bands), but these guys can really tear it up live. This is the third time I've caught the Blue Van and I've noticed that each time the crowds normally have started off seeming somewhat apathetic, scattered around the room, sipping their drinks. But as the band plays they slowly inch in closer and closer towards the stage with each song until by the end it's just a swirling mass of heads rocking out to the sweet Voxy grooves.

I mentioned the Five O’clock Heroes to a friend of mine recently and she huffed and said dismissively "Whateva, those guys are just like a mix of the Strokes and the Libertines". Ok, if that sounds like a bad thing to you, then this is definitely not the band for you. If that sounds really fucking cool to you, then I'll see you at the next show.

This was the best of the monthly Shindig! parties I've been to - beautiful room, great crowd, and an excellent music line-up featuring the Five O’clock Heroes. These guys are definitely one of the better underground bands banging around the city this year. Great tunes & performance and the crowd was loving it.
