Chicago: 05.27 International Noise Conspiracy @ Beat Kitchen

Splits, spins, karate kicks, mic swinging, moon walking, crowd diving, walking on heads, ski masks, communist sloganeering – all just another day at the office for Sweden’s International Noise Conspiracy. Lars, Dennis & co. treated the packed crowed in the steamy back room of Chi-towns Beat Kitchen to the best set I’ve seen from them yet – the show was high energy as always but musically the guitars and vocals were better than ever. The crowd was so into it bopping & shouting along through every song that by the end they seemed more wiped out than the band. INC did an extended encore & even hung out after working the room and chatting with fans.

Despite the insane temperatures due to the heat wave that was going on Beat Kitchen was a pretty cool spot. Good lighting and sound, reasonably priced, drinks & good food.

Chicago: 05-26 the Fame @ Subterranean

The Fame’s hard charging rock was definitely the highlight of a lineup packed with interesting bands. Subterranean was an odd place lined with creaky wood old that looked like something straight out of the show Deadwood. I kept waiting for Al Swearingin to walk out onto the narrow balcony.

NC to NYC newcomers Hymns treated the crowd at Sin-e to an excellent selection of tunes from their new album “Brother/Sister”. Fusing elements of modern alt-country and indie rock the band plays with a cool confidence live allowing the strong songwriting & instrumentation to speak or themselves. A guest laptop steel guitar player joined Hymns onstage for a couple of tracks adding some welcome flourishes that got the crowd moving. This is definitely a group worth checking out for fans of modern rootsy rock like Kings of Leon, Oakley Hall or Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

One of the things that makes Cake Shop one of my favorite spots anywhere to catch shows is even if you've never heard of who's playing the talent bookers there are so on point about choosing quality acts odds are you'll get your money's worth. I had never heard of "Green Milk from the Planet Orange" before this show but I anted up my $6 and headed in. Best ticket I bought all week because these guys kicked ass. After ripping through several of their own pounding hard-prog tunes (partially while standing on folding chairs) – Green Milk tore into a wandering cover of Metallica's epic "Sanitarium" from the classic “Master of Puppets” album. Following in the tradition of Electric Eel Shock, DMBQ, and (the gods) Guitar Wolf these kids from Japan definitely know how o deliver the goods live.

Going all the way back to Iggy Pop & beyond, when the front man of a band strips down to his skivvies for a show it's a clear statement he's here to rock, means business, got nothing to hide and is holding nothing back. After seven albums and countless shows Old Time Relijun & vocalist/guitarist Arrington DeDionyso came to Cake Shop ready for action and tore through their deep song catalog with a hard charging set that had the crowd in the sweaty basement clapping along and hooting for more.

I dipped into Sin-e early Thursday night just in time to catch Brooklyn soul rockers the Teenage Prayers dropping their smokey brand of indie rock. Singer Tim Adams has got some great pipes and leads the band through a handful of catchy tunes with danceable rhythms and sing-along choruses. They even do a Solomon Burke cover ("Goodbye Baby"). Another tune "She Ain't My Baby" is smooth as butter - a classic Summer love song turned inside out with biting lyrics (..."She ain't my destiny/ She's just a bump in the road"). If you need a change of pace from the droves of watered down punk and 10th generation new wave going on right now the Teenage Prayers is definitely a group worth checking out.

This was the release party for Aloke's debut LP "One Day We Will Kill You". Descendents of the Fugazi-style no frills, no nonsense, school of post-punk; the band's music is as hard & uncompromising as the name sounds. Live they're one of the most powerful & intense bands in the city. Highly recommended.

The combination of the Picture & the Cold War Kids was just to much for the NYC hype machine to resist as the tiny band room at Pianos was filled to capacity by a crowd downtown hipsters, bloggers, celebs, and industry types all trying to get a look at the newest internet hype phenoms. Luckily there's a lot more to the CWKS's than just hype and they handled it all well delivering a riveting set filled with passionate songs. The band plays with tons of energy & when you watch you can't help but to feel like you're seeing something special. By the end it was clear to all in attendance that this band has unlimited potential - catch 'em in a small room while you still can.
