Post a Comment FYI, Everyone I've updated the South by Southwest Posts:
1) Now, there's music & video for each band 2) If you click on any photo for any of the bands the full photoset for that show will open in a new window (this was alot easier than doing 55 separate posts!)
Sorry if I've been slow responding to your emails, I've been in the lab working on a few projects for the past few days but I should have a ton of new stuff posted by tonight including a bunch of new SXSW pics (and hopefully answer the emails).
The Rub & MyOpenBar.com (the eBible for metro drunks) are joining forces for what will surely be the party of the week:

Day four of my SXSW trip might have been the best one, here's a quick recap:
the Holloways @ Emos (AP/Wide World of Warped)
I woke up, dusted myself off, gunned some leftover Sparks, & rolled into Emo's as London's Holloways were winning over the ladies in the crowd with an impressive set of Brit-punk. They're touring in the UK with the Rakes right now so it looks like big things could be in the near future for this talented young band.
Barcelona Spain's Pinker Tones were just pure electro-dance-rock fun complete with synchronized dancing and rave-style wall projections. It was an instant party from the moment they hit the stage and its hard to imagine anyone into techno not having fun at one of their shows.
Used to playing for huge crowds in the UK but just catching on over here the Automatic were up to the challenge playing like headliners feroiciously pounding their instruments, diving into the crowd, climbing the beams at the club - all in the middle of the afternoon. Their best songs "Raul", "Monster" have a huge sound that should appeal to any fans of punk or dance-rock.

Ghostface & Rakim @ Stubbs (Scion/Vice)
Two of the best mcs ever, a live band, a great crowd - all for free! It's interesting how haters are steady whining about how hip-hop is dead, but this was by far the biggest crowd of the whole week, even without relying on free beer as a lure, hmm...
Another band that seems to be on the verge of making big moves - two beautiful ladies with guitars & an excellent debut LP "Violence is Golden", what more do you need?
Vietnam @ Fader Fort
Another excellent set from the NYC southern rockers, the perfect music downing beers on a breezy afternoon in the Texas sun.
Funk Doctor Spock, Reginald Noble aka Redman repped Brick City with a fun set best symbolized when a fan in the front row offered him a "smoke" Red immediately replied "Yes, I will take that - thanks!" puffed and went right back to his crazy rhymes. One of the best freestylers ever Redman's got a new album on the way - don't call it a comeback!
I was about to jump in and show off some of my poppin' & lockin' moves but, um... I had a beer in my hand!
Dragons of Zynth @ Ms Bea's (Todd P)
I hiked across town just in time to catch the end of the Dragons of Zynth's set. Canned rock-crit labels like afro-punk, angular, etc. just don't do this band's raw tsunami of noise enough justice. Much like associates TV on the Radio, the Dragons are sonic adventurers that conjure slightly different sounds everytime I see them live but each time they get a little better.
This was one of those sets where it seemed like at any second everything might go haywire but it never did. The Australian punks rocked the hell out of the tiny second stage at Ms. Bea's.
After this I'd had enough of photoing and headed back to South Austin to pack, then partied dumb hard at the Vice after party until that ended early when a railing gave out and someone took a header off the roof balcony. From there it was back to PureVolume until they closed down & straight from there to the airport for the redeye back to Brooklyn. I caught 55 bands in the four days, caught up with a lot of old friends & made some new ones - SXSW '07 was crazy fun!

Here's a very quick recap of my day three @ SXSW '07:
Vietnam @ Red Eyed Fly (Little Radio)
I was chillin' in the courtyard at Side Bar waiting for the Park the Van day show to kick off when I heard the sounds of Brooklyn's Vietnam coming from Red Eyed Fly next door. So, I darted around the corner & caught their set at the Little Radio party. The guys have a dreamy, ambient Southern Rock sound somewhere between the "Southern Harmony..." era Black Crowes & Mogwaii.
Got back to Side Bar (a really comfortable little spot off from the chaos of the main strip with a friendly staff) just in time to catch Tulsa. Keep an eye out for this band, they put on a great show that got the crowd buzzing.
The front man of the Capital Years took it right to the streets during their set running to the front door of the club and luring in dazed & hungover hipsters with some Rock n' Roll pied-piper action.
F-ing mind blowing!! I'll write more about this later but these guys from San Diego absolutely killed with a sound that reminded me of a (perhaps) heavier Comets on Fire. Earthless were easily one of the 5 best bands I saw all week in Austin.
I stumbled onto this set in progress completly by accident as I was wandering around looking for free beer. As far as I can tell this Austin band's specialty is flamboyantly gay punk filled with piercing feedback, snotty vocals and political sloganeering. It actually wasn't bad but went on for too long.
Fans of the band Fucked Up showin' their Tats
Cheeseburger @ the Longbranch Inn
I've seen Cheeseburger a few times in NYC but as they were playing I didn't even realize it was them. The singer's lost crazy weight and the band sounds tighter than ever!
Next up was the Diesel Jeans U-Music party right near the Texas state capital building. I couldn't get any pics of them but the Epochs were on as I was checking in playing some excellent tunes. The crowd was pretty low-key at first but once Matt & Kim hit the stage the crowd started getting into party mode. Their infectious positive punk energy (combined with a sweet all you can drink open bar) got everyone in the room feeling good.
Crowd participation was the theme for the evening at the Diesel Jam and when Girl Talk hit the stage an all out dance party broke out with the entire front of the crowd rushing the stage to shake their asses & party with the super DJ who kept his energy up by pounding shots of whiskey between the mixes. This party was crazy fun!
The after, after hours at PureVolume was bananas as always with a crowd of rockers & industry types wired on free vodkaReds (I was well into the double digits by this point) wandering around swappin' stories on the day's action with some good bands playing in the main room. When Denver's Photo Atlas hit the stage the crowd went completely nuts - moshing, crowd surfing, dancing on the stage and the band seemed to feed off the energy playing a ridiculously hot & longer than usual set.
