More rewarding with each listen & easily one of my picks for the best (and insanely underrated) albums of the year so far is the Rakes' "Ten New Messages". Sounding like the second album Bloc Party, or Franz Ferdinand should have made, the record's best moments are relentless dance punk filled with insightful songs that perfectly capture the undercurrent of constant angst & tension of city life in a post 9/11 world; Oblivious detachment - "The World Was a Mess But His Hair Was Perfect", Misguided rage leading to isolation - "Suspicious Eyes", Helpless fear - "When Tom Cruise Cries", Raw, unstoppable determination - "On a Mission", and Hope in the face of all odds - "We Danced Together".
The show was pure fun - a fired up after-hours crowd and a band in top form completely vibing off their energy. The Rakes are one of the best & only play in the US once in a while so do not miss them if they're headed your way.
