       The tiny basement of Cake Shop filled up pretty quickly with curious types looking to catch a glimpse of Brooklyn buzz band Vampire Weekend. The guys dove into an impressive array of selections from their eclectic self-titled debut EP with the intimacy of the live setting giving their straightforward rockers ("A-Punk") & Libertinesy nostalgic romps ("Boston", "Campus") some additional punch. Echoes of "Graceland" era Paul Simon float over the mellow vocals & rolling percussion of "Mansford Roof" & "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa". The quartet really hit its stride on standouts tracks "Oxford Comma" and the Clash/Reggae tinged "The Kids Don't Stand a Chance", closing things out with a roaring version of "Walcott" that left the crowd hooting for more. There wasn't a dud or dull moment in the whole set so it wouldn't be surprising to see Vampire Weekend rocking much bigger rooms soon. Highly Recommended - definitely a band to watch.
