Fiddle While You Burn

Apparently dipping around the world opening for a mega-genius like Bjork is paying off for these guys because their experimental dance rock sounded better than ever as they blew the roof off the Vic - lifting the spirits of even the most dejected in Wrigleyville (the Cubs got bounced from the playoffs just before this show).

the Klaxons

Chicago, IL's online infocenter Chicagoist has picked one of my shots of the Klaxons for a funny review of the bands last show "Klaxons: More Rock Than Dance".

Funny coincidence since I'm in the middle of a couple of Chicago oriented projects (more details soon).

This show was the grand finale of what was unofficially "Klaxons Week" in NYC. The London "Nu-Rave" stars were pretty much everywhere in the media while playing or djaying at least 4 times in 4 days promoting their debut LP "Myths of the Near Future".

While the Klaxons definitely qualify as new, unless you're really, reeeally high - the "rave" bit seems to have more to do with their visual style & intense live energy than their sound which is generally more guitar pick than glowstick with surrealist/absurdist lyrics on top. The labels hardly mattered live though as the hyped crowd at Williamburg's cavernous Studio B wasted no time getting into the action from the moment the band ripped into their bouncy hit "Atlantis to Interzone".

I've seen a few good bands tank under the pressure of their US debut (Jet for example) and some kill (the Rakes) so I wasn't sure what I was in for with the Klaxons late night showcase for their new label Modular.

Turns out the guys are pretty good - they're being hyped by the UK media as "New Rave" but live the band was more on the rocking side and reminded me of the Prodigy a bit (but way less bombastic & more poppy). The steamy basement of Club Midway was packed with excited partygoers & curious media types but the band didn't seem nervous at all & played a tight, focused set filled with crowd moving party songs.

If you missed this show the Klaxons are playing another one on in NYC Thursday 9/21 at Studio B in Brooklyn before heading off on their world tour to promote their new recording “Xan Valleys”.

This might be interesting, the Klaxons are being hyped as "New Rave" by the UK music media (break out your glow sticks!) & this will be their first US show. Norwegian rockers 120 Days (formerly known as the Beautiful People) are opening - they've got a slightly darker sound but are similar in style.
