06-28 the Ropes @ Lit (2)

The Ropes survived some technical difficulty early on the the set and deliviered a pretty good performance featuring tunes off their new EP "Kill Her Off". Singer Sharon Shy has a mellow voice similar to the Breeders Kim Deal and the music reminded me of Stereolab with a little Garbage thrown into the mix.

Still five strong & finishing off a string of impressive warm-up performances before heading into the studio, unsigned New York Brit-Rock powerhouse Billbones kicked out the jams in the packed basement of NYC hipster paradise Lit.

Run Run Run
rocked the house in the tiny back room of Cake Shop with an excellent selection of tunes from their new LP Endless Winter. Their sound stuck as a mixture of BRMC and Spiritualized.

Yes, that Blue Cheer – the 70’s “Summertime Blues” power trio is back together and touring. Since I’ve had a vinyl copy of “Vincebus Eruptum” since I was a kid I had to go check ‘em out. Turns out they still kick ass live. “Parchmans Farm” alone was worth the 10 bucks.

One of the best shows I've ever seen - the mighty Guitar Wolf blew the roof off CBGBs. This was one of those nights where everything just came together perfectly - amazing music & a fun crowd, in a legendary room.

If you've never heard of Guitar Wolf... I feel bad for you.

From the Archives: Chicago: 05-28-06 The Redwalls @ the Metro

Post a Comment

****
We showed up at the Metro in Wrigleyville just in time to catch one of Chicago’s best rock n’ roll bands the Redwalls take the stage sending the females in the all-ages crowd into full swoon mode. There wasn’t one dud song in the bunch as the band worked it's way through one catchy, harmony filled number after another. Clearly years of gigging has shaped the Redwalls into a polished and professional group. When you watching them I got the feeling that if a pack of wild dogs ran out onto the stage they would just keep smiling and singing barely missing a beat. For the grand finale the band bought out the drum section of a marching band to accompany them for a booming finale to a fun show.

I know everybody’s got a favorite song but no “Thank You”? Come on guys, that songs a gem.

Ghostface Mosaic

There's a reason why when Wu dropped 36 Chambers back in in '93 they picked Ghostface Killah as the very first MC to set it on the first track. Ghost is a master MC and the most charismatic, dynamic lyricist since Kool G Rap - one of the few remaining direct connections to the Golden Age of Hip-Hop. His rhyme style and the beats he chooses show a true understanding of the power, soul, and history of the art & amazingly he seems to just be getting better. He has by far the most quotable lines of any MC and is unbelievably prolific (he's been on at least three albums a year since '94!).

This was my third Ghostface show and live he truly lives up to his Ironman nickname. You'd think for an industry party he'd do a few joints and bounce, but no - he did like 15 songs!! The Fader crowd of hipsters and industry types just completely lost it as Ghost ripped through classics like "Cherchez La Ghost", "Mighty Healthy" & a ridiculously ill acapella version of "Wildflower" that Ghost dedicated "to the ladies". Then fired-up girls from the crowd bumrushed the tiny stage and shook their Texan asses as Ghost tore through a few new joints including his newest hit "Back Like That". It was clear Ghost was vibing off the crowd's energy and could have kept going all night. When he said a final peace and strolled off stage the crowd screamed and pounded their feet for more. So he came back out and dropped the megaton bomb "the Watch". Good lord - few rappers are better live than on CD but Ghost is the Don - you gotta see him.

Also notable is how Ghost's crew the Theodore Unit is actually really ill (listen to the "Put it on the line" album and tell me Trife doesn't just KILL it). On the real - it's scary how NYC hip-hop is falling off and the only way to take it back is if the MCs at the highest level spend less time on being greedy moguls and shit and more time taking the youth under their wing and schooling them on basic skills.

... Ghostface keeps Killin’ it!
(props to the Fader mag for the amazing party)
