Philadelphia Psych-Rockers Dr. Dog just absolutely killed at the Pool. Their most recent release “Easy Beat” is required listening for anyone into Beefheart (see below) influenced rock (in fact, it’s easily on of the best 5 albums I’ve heard so far this year). Live the band takes their already impressive catalog of songs make them even better by ratcheting up the intensity complete with foot stomps & hand claps. The whole set was excellent but “Fools Life” particularly stood out with its blotto vocals & spiraling carnivalesque conclusion. Dr. Dog kept things interesting throughout even joking about the people who had opted to play dodge ball in the rain on the other side of the pool rather than watch the show. By the time the band walked off after the campfire sing-along choruses of “Wake Up”. The soaked but cheerful crowd could only cheer for an encore.

It’d be great to see these guys on a bill with Man Man (another excellent Philly band).

Watch & Listen:
Dr. Dog

Ed’s Note: If somehow you’ve never listened to or are unfamiliar with Captain Beefheart, his live album “I'm Going to Do What I Wanna Do: Live at My Father's Place 1978” is f-ing essential!!

I showed up early last Sunday for Jelly NYC’s free Sunday concert series in time to catch Elvis Perkins & his band playing their hearts out for a mostly empty McCarran Pool (due to a light but steady rainfall over the park). The band got off to a low key start but raised the energy level gradually with each song. Elvis has got a fine voice & he led the band through a very entertaining Americana influenced set that helped everyone forget about the overcast gloom & rain for a bit.

08-25 Ted Leo & the Pharmacists @ SSS (3)

Fresh from a label switch from Lookout Records to Touch & Go, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists lived up to their longtime rep as one of the best live indie-bands around with an inspired performance that left the packed crowd at South Street Seaport cheering with excitement. I had only seen Ted Leo rip it up solo a couple of times (and both of those shows were pretty impressive) but his full backup band things pushes the passion & intensity to another level. Drummer Chris Wilson (an absolute beast on the skins) & bassist Dave Lerner are the perfect accompaniment for Leo's raging falsetto indie-punk (i-punk?).

If you've never heard the Pharmacists before check out the sampling of MP3s below. They've got a great sound for anyone into, Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello, the Clash or pretty much any kind of music that rocks with heart & soul.

The Onion Society For The Preservation Of Alcohol Meeting #13

Post a Comment

This just came in...
-------------

Wednesday, September 6, 7-9 p.m.

The Onion Society For The Preservation Of Alcohol will continue its triumphant run in Brooklyn when, on Wednesday, September 6, the Society meets at The Brazen Head in Boerum Hill. The libation of honor will be Beefeater gin. Did you know Beefeater was created by John Burrough in 1820, himself a second-generation Society member? Don't try to look it up. You won't find it anywhere. The Society has never been capable of keeping accurate membership records what with all the secrecy and poor candlelight in the early days.

The Society will buy your Beefeater gin drinks from 7-9 p.m. (while supply lasts).

Must be 21+.

If you plan to attend the Society meeting, please RSVP to nypromo@theonion.com with "Society" in the subject. Your friends are invited, too.

A last minute fill in for Aeroplane Pagent, Brooklyn rockers Slowlands played an impressive sampling of tracks from their latest release “Never Was There a Town”. The set was mostly more down tempo, melodic, indie rock with a heavy Americana influence but there were some moments where the songs would build allowing the band to rock out a bit. This band is worth a listen if you enjoy groups such as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah or Tapes N’ Tapes.

Dallas, TX rockers the Hourly Radio continued their month long residency at the Annex with another excellent set of goth influenced indie-rock. They’re playing their final night of this residency at the Annex on Thursday 8/31 and are definitely worth checking out for anyone into similar bands like Stellastarr or Editors.
