FWYB's Holiday Break Continues...

Post a Comment

Happy Holidays everyone, I'm on the road with limited internet access in South Florida until next week. But don't worry we'll be back recharged & strong for the new year. Until then here's some things you might find interesting:

Say it Loud - Thanks, Props, & R.I.P. James Brown

James Brown's body to lie at NYC Apollo (AP)
from Yahoo! News: Music News

First off RIP to the "Godfather of Soul" James Brown, one of the most influential & important musicians of the last century. I caught him a few of years ago doing a show at Battery Park in NYC and it was one of my all-time favorite shows. I remember thinking "If he's this energetic now, just imagine when he was at full power during the 60's & 70's!". I'll post some pics from that day when I get back to NYC but here's some MP3's from Chromewaves (another excellent music blog):

MP3: James Brown - "Santa Claus, Go Straight To The Ghetto"
MP3: Belle & Sebastian - "Santa Claus, Go Straight To The Ghetto"

Read the paper the headline say "Washed up Rapper Got a Song"...
(Bonus points to anyone who knows what song that line is from)

FWYB contributor by Angry Citizen has a head-bobbing, downloadable "Where are They Now?" mixtape of one hit wonder hip-hop artists HERE:

See if you can spot the James Brown samples. I always thought tracking down washed-up rappers would make for a good reality TV show. Hollywood, are you listening?

This was a party to celebrate the release of the latest issue of the Fader magazine which features Brooklyn southern rockers Vietnam on the cover. The band seemed to be in good spirits & played an impressive set of soulful, rootsy Rock. If their upcoming debut LP can match the consistent high quality of their live shows it looks like 2007 is gonna be a big year for these guys.

The Chainsaw Trio kicked off Shindig! with an intense set of bluesy, soul influenced Rock & Roll. The crowd started off pretty small but filled up steadily song by song as the band gained momentum with each tune. The songs and performance were of an unusually high quality overall and left the crowd buzzing positively afterwards. The Chainsaw Trio are definitely worth catching live if you're into quality bluesy indie like the John Spencer, Reigning Sound, or the Black Keys.

The Annex was packed wall to wall with late night partiers eager to catch Cali-Brooklyn power trio We Are Scientist ripping it up at the debut of NME’s new “Club NME” party at the Annex. The Scientists didn’t disappoint playing a fun set of filled with inventive, sing along hooks & tight guitar work. I’ve been a fan of the bands "Safety Fun and Learning" album for a while now so it was good to hear older tunes like "Over & Out" & "the Bomb Inside the Bomb" live. Highly recommended.

Roaring back from hiatus Billbones looked leaner & meaner heading into '07. The set was typical Billbones - non-stop party rock and at the end the crowd rushed the staged to join the band for some dancing. The bands buzz song "American Radio" got the biggest crowd response of the night.

where are the pics from their final set? When they let - quite possibly- the 3 weirdest people dance on stage? That was the funniest noise ever

I think there's a few shots of the grand finale in the photo set. One of the days I might have to join in and do the the Worm.

Another good set from Ra Ra Riot in an unusual but fun setting for Filter Magazines holiday party . The combination of the bands’ unique instrumental setup six piece with electric cello & violin, energetic frontman Wesley Miles, and unlimited Bass beer definitely put the small crowd of downtown hipsters in a festive holiday mood. There were good vibes all around at this show.

This band knocked me out with their catchy online recordings so I had to go and check ‘em out live. Turns out they’re even better onstage - Locksley treated the mid-sized crowd @ the Mercury Lounge high energy set of Brit-Pop influenced party rock that left the crowd screaming for more.

A quality band with Southern Rock roots, the Coydogs survived a bit of technical difficulty to & came through with an entertaining set. I‘d seen a long string of crappy 80’s influenced bands leading up to this show so The Coydogs confident, melodic style was a welcome change of pace.

the Coydogs - "It's Raining"

I went to this show. It's really too bad the sound was so bad. Granted, the venue lacks acoustics...But the coydogs battled thru it, and were great. I really enjoyed them, as well as the other bands.

I was also excited to see Diamond Nights. We saw them before, touring with Hot Hot Heat, and loved them. They put on one helluva show. Unfortunately, friday night, the Diamond Nights decided to drop a large steamy one their fans. Talk about a bunch of primadonnas. After one fan yelled "Snakey Ruth!", Morgan followed with drug & alcohol slurred, "...Snakey Bullshit!". And it was all downhill from there. At one point he just disappeared with his band still on stage. Way to go guys...bunch of flash in the pan assholes...

Wow, I had no idea! I left right after the Coydogs set.
