Headlining the night at rock legend BP Fallon's weekly Death Disco party was local up & comers Sigmund Droid. The Brooklyn drum & bass duo is quickly gaining a reputation around the city for it's awesome live shows & catchy songs. Vocalist / bassist Solomon and Pablo on drums displayed a pretty wide range during the set with the songs shifting from dance-influenced electro "Psychic Healer" to snotty Brit-punk "Liverpool Sluts" and even a few slow tunes thrown in. Overall there wasn't a dud in the set and by the end the after-hours crowd at the Annex was cheering for more. Sigmund Droid have the chops to appeal to any lovers of indie or electro rock.

Interestingly, Sigmund Droid have a song called "Sigmund Droid". I love it when bands do this - every good group should have it's own theme song. So I'm putting the challenge out there: If you're in a band and you're reading this, your band needs a theme song - so write one! Bet it's not as easy to write your own "Bad Company" as you might think.

Hitting the stage just before sunrise (okay it was actually about 3 am) at the Annex's always fun Stolen Transmission party, Waterford UK rockers Mohair! effectively blew away the mediocre bands that opened for them with a catchy selection of songs that combine elements of classic, garage, & indie rock. The band held nothing back on stage playing through the set with an infectious enthusiasm and energy that the after-hours crowd of hipsters and industry types were definitely feelin'. Mohair! is a band to keep an eye on & are definitely worth checkin' out live.

I checked out this band on their mySpace before the show and was kind of on the fence, but live - wow! Saints & Lovers were really impressive, they played a set filled with slowly building epic songs that reminded me of "Origin of Symmetry" era Muse a bit.

Whenever you see a band setting up on stage with the traditional guitar, guitar, bass, drums setup you can pretty much bet that however good they might be they're not exactly reinventing the wheel up there musically and these's a 99% chance that you've already seen someone else do the same thing but better. So it's fun to see band adding in different instruments and song structures into the mix - at least there's a chance they might do something unique or interesting.

Beat the Devil is a good example of this, featuring vocalist Shilpa Ray on a Harmonium (sort of an accordion on a table), backed by xylophone, drum and bass setup that combined to create a unique sound oscillating from ominous & foreboding at times to fast paced borderline euphoric bursts of energy at others. The most interesting moments came towards the end of the set when the songs shifted gears to a faster pace and bass player Mishka could open up & shred a bit (and he really shreds - it's was borderline surf-bass at some points).

In addition to having a unique sound Beat the Devil are fascinating performers and are highly recommended for anyone into more experimental modern indie such as the Occasion & lovers of classic experimental underground like the Velvet Underground.

Beat the Devil have a residency coming up at the Knitting Factory, they'll be playing every Monday in November.

I'd been hearing positive buzz around the city about Jonny Lives! for a while now so I was curious to check out their free showcase in the basement of packed basement of LES hipster hangout the Delancey. Overall, I was pretty impressed with the band's hard-rocking, garage-pop performance. They're entertaining performers not afraid to engage the crowd and they've some catchy songs ("Outside", "Love Conspiracy") that could catch on if they get some airplay.

Jonny Lives!
are touring all over right now and are definitely a good time worth checking for lovers of more poppy garage like Jet or the Redwalls.
