Full disclosure, I've never actually seen Sonic Youth live but FWYB Contributor Angry Citizen got right up in front for these great shots of the NYC legeneds burning up the stage at Webster Hall. You can read his full review of the show on his music blog AngryCitizen.org.
This should be a good one - The Teddybears are definitely gonna rock the house but don't miss openers Roman Candle...

A little disappointing. No doubt former Gang Starr & Jeru the Damaja protege Afu-Ra can rock the mic but by the time he hit the stage (well after midnight) the crowd had thinned out. Plus no Masta Killah (cancelled at the last minute).
The tiny basement of Cake Shop filled up pretty quickly with curious types looking to catch a glimpse of Brooklyn buzz band Vampire Weekend. The guys dove into an impressive array of selections from their eclectic self-titled debut EP with the intimacy of the live setting giving their straightforward rockers ("A-Punk") & Libertinesy nostalgic romps ("Boston", "Campus") some additional punch. Echoes of "Graceland" era Paul Simon float over the mellow vocals & rolling percussion of "Mansford Roof" & "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa". The quartet really hit its stride on standouts tracks "Oxford Comma" and the Clash/Reggae tinged "The Kids Don't Stand a Chance", closing things out with a roaring version of "Walcott" that left the crowd hooting for more.
There wasn't a dud or dull moment in the whole set so it wouldn't be surprising to see Vampire Weekend rocking much bigger rooms soon. Highly Recommended - definitely a band to watch.
Post a Comment I'm in the process of making my final schedule for SXSW and just when I though things couldn't possibly get more jam packed HoustonSoReal has upped the stakes riduclously with his list of Hip-Hop events he's sponsoring. Too much to list but you can check it out here...
10p Free! (free CDs to first 100 guests) @ Happy Ending - Bootie - all mash-up mixtape party w/ Adrian Roberts (Smash-Up Derby) & two floors of DJs from San Francisco, Paris, and NYC.
10p Free! (w/ rsvp) @ Hiro Ballroom - Cheeky Bastard Presents: DJ Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) w/ Live performances by A Place to Bury Strangers, Coin Under Tongue
My main question going into this show was if rising stars Dr. Dog could possibly follow up on the subtle brilliance of its last full length album, 2005's classic "Easy Beat". In the time since then the band’s earned glowing reviews, toured with several high profile bands (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the Black Keys, the Raconteurs.) and released an EP (2006's hidden treasure "Takers & Leavers"), so the guys have set the bar pretty high for themselves.
Once the band hit the stage in the backroom of Philly saloon Johnny Brenda’s they wasted no time diving right into their newest material, treating the packed crowd to a generous selection of short blasts from their newest release "We All Belong" before moving into highlights from its older releases. Backed at times by live horns & a string section songs such as "the Pretender", "California", "Goner" seemed made for the intimate room as vocalists Toby Leaman & Scott McMicken voices sailed to the roof. As Dr. Dog moved into its more familiar material the crowd began singing along eventually rushing the stage to join in the sing along climax of the campfire epic "Wake Up".
So, based on this set the answer is a resounding yes - at least live, Dr. Dog continue to impress with their hypnotic blend of psych-rock, melodic soul, & harmonious indie-pop all while avoiding any jam bandish bloat and self indulgence. If "We All Belong" captures the live energy of the tunes it should be another knockout.
about the pix: Just to switch things up a bit I shot these at 16:9 from the second floor balcony of Johnny Brenda’s. So the enlarged versions might look a little better than the ones above. So check out the enlarged versions in the flickr set if you're interested.
This concert was a madness because my cousin told me that women began to throw their thongs on the stage imagine what a perfect concert they gave to their fans in order to them trowing their underwear
What a blast.
