In order to celebrate the release of it's new iPod competition the Zune, Microsoft threw a series of blowouts across the nation last night featuring some big name bands. In NYC they went really big with Stoner rock gods Queens of the Stone Age. QOTSA (of course) absolutely destroyed, playing a short but devastating set for the packed house mostly focused on newer material. If you've never seen Queens of the Stone Age live... You really need to do something about that.
Interesting side story about this show - while we're all waiting outside the club to get in, an air conditioner came falling down from one of the apartments above and smashed into some guys head. Amazingly, he had a pretty nasty looking gash but seemed otherwise ok. Gotta stay alert in at all times in NYC!
"Tickets to the Queens of the Stone Age show (Zune launch party) can be "picked up @ Circuit City in Union Square today (Friday Novemeber 10th) starting @ 7pm - on a first come, first served basis. Tickets come in pairs. You must be 21 or over to enter." The 9pm-midnight NYC show's exact location will be announced Monday (annoying, I know)."
I'm still trying to wrap my aching head around everything that went down at South by Southwest '06. There was so much music & endless free booze that while I was down there I felt like I was slacking but I actually wound up seeing alot of great bands (31 in three days!). My camera got stolen at this crazy party Saturday night but one of my friends down there loaned me a backup and I powered on. Wu Tang killed it as always but this time with a live band Roots style (people forget but Wu's an indie band); Editors looked unstoppable - definitely future stars; Voxtrot were the most consistent (it seemed like they were at every party), We Are Wolves made alot of new fans rocking the late night VIP parties, Silversun Pickups we're my favorite new discovery (amazing!) and DMBQ completely blew everyone's minds - it was the stuff of legend. They ended their insane set by throwing their drum kit into the middle of the crowd at this mexican roadhouse and the smashing it to pieces with a cinder block!! It was even more nuts than it sounds. So despite some setbacks and bad weather I had a blast and met a lot of cool people. Austin is great and you should all try to make it down next year.
Cheers to all my friends & thanks for your continued love & support,
- FWYB
(and bumps to Stolen Transmission, Fixed NYC, Todd P, Fader, Vice, Spaceland, Southpaw, Diesel, Adult Swim, Glurp & Little Radio for throwing the best parties of the week)
QOTSA has been one of my favorite bands ever since I caught them at Roseland a few years ago. So I was excited to check out the new line-up & songs. Clearly, I wasn't the only one because the show was sold out & scalpers were everywhere outside. Inside, the pit was insane from the first note - I shot most of these pix from the middle of a mob slam dancing, bouncing, & singing along with every song (even the new unreleased ones - kinda strange). I hope the guys can get it together and Nick O. comes back, but for now Josh is definitely holding it down. Best show of the Winter.
