True story: A while back I was on a small jet from Texas with Tall Hands flying through an electrical storm when suddenly the plane dropped in the air. People started screaming & praying, drinks spilled everywhere, even the flight attendants looked freaked out - I was pretty sure I was going to die. Finally after about about 20 seconds that felt like 2 minutes the plane straightened out. The pilot blamed the whole thing on the storm.  When I saw the guys after the flight we all swore off the shady airline.

Returning from a brief hiatus, the New York indie-rock sextet (formerly known as the Kites) played a short but sweet set for the late night crowd at lower east side hipster palace Pianos. The bands got a catchy, piano driven sound that reminded me of "Kill the Moonlight" era Spoon a bit. They've got a new EP scheduled to "drop" in October:

Ever sense listening to "Stockholm Syndrome" for the first time a few years ago I've been telling anyone who would listen that Muse is easily one of the best rock bands on the planet. Their show at Webster Hall during the Absolution tour ranked as one of the top three shows I went to in ‘04, and the album was filled with epic classics ("T.S.P.", “Apocalypse Please”, "Hysteria", etc.).

But, I was a little worried about this show after listening to their latest album "Blackholes & Revelations". After a couple of listens the new tunes struck me as mostly overblown & melodramatic even for Muse. Even the title of the first single is redundant (“Supermassive Blackhole”) and “Knights of Caledonia” is so overblown with its horse noises and studio effects even now I wonder if it’s some kind of supermassive joke.

Fortunately, Muse is still phenomenal live. This time the band had a stage backdrop to match the epic scale of their songs - a high-voltage electro laser multimedia freak-out perfect for newer songs like “Starlight”, “Invincible”, and yes even “Knights of Caledonia” to take on an energy that makes them work. The sold-out crowd ate it up and by the time Bellamy & Co. got to their end-all-be-all perfect song "Stockholm Syndrome" the ballroom was a sea of waving arms and bobbing heads screaming along with every lyric.

Granted, over the top laser lights production makes sense considering the epic reach of Muse's music but the whole thing still felt over blown. The music kills and Matt Bellamy's singing and instrumental skills are absolutely jaw-dropping at times, so shouldn’t that be enough? Does music really need a return to the Spinal-Tapish excesses of baby-boomer supermassive stadium rock? I was almost shocked when the band didn't ride in on flying dolphins for the “Knights of Caledonia” encore.

After the show I was thinking about how my favorite Muse song is called “Stockholm Syndrome” – a psychological term for while held captive against your will, slowly starting to empathize with the people who are holding you captive until you finally see things their way. Hmm…

I'd imagine being picked to open for Muse would be something of a blessing and a curse. Muse fans are almost religious in their devotion to the band but if you don't have it together they won't hesitate to let you know. But Brooklyn’s Cloud Room proved at Hammerstein the are up to the task. I had seen this band a couple of times before, but this set was miles ahead of the other two. The band was tight throughout the set and it seems like Matt Bellamy's influence is particularly rubbing off on the bands singer J. who was in top voice. They ripped through a raging version of their hit "Hey Now Now" that had the early birds in the crowd singing along and overall the guys looked pretty comfortable on the big stage. This is definitely a band worth checking out for lovers of tuneful indie rock

Die! Die! Die! continue to blow me away with their relentless punk energy. Topping off a line-up of some of the finest indie-rock bands around singer Henry Die! tore through the crowd (trailed by probably the longest mic cord I’ve ever seen) climbing the bar to a doing a painful looking cannonball off a barstool, then springing back up seemingly unfazed to leap onto a table screaming lyrics at the stunned crowd. The next stop is the UK for these guys.

Chicago’s Detachment Kit absolutely whop ass every time I see them. Mixing together elements of punk, & grunge the band creates a unique, intense sound that stands out in the current sea of post-punkers. After a few songs singer Iam Menard upped the danger level a bit, and brought the show front & center to the crowd - pouncing down off the stage with the mike stand in hand and setting up right in the middle of the first few rows of cheering partier as the rest of the group continued to shred away on the stage. Do not miss these guys when they’re in your area.

I'd been hearing good buzz about Goes Cube for a while now but this was actually my first show. Looks like I've been missing out because these guys killed. The band’s monster rhythm section creates a propulsive, deeply crunchy sound that mixes elements of early 90’s grunge like Mudhoney with the stoner-rock magic of Queens of the Stone Age. The tempo changes & vocal range within some of the songs were particularly excellent. Singer David O. was the first of the evening to take the fury into the crowd in true punk style - wading into the crowd & swinging his guitar over the bobbing heads. Goes Cube only refers to their songs by numbers but “Goes Cube Song Number 30” in particular is the shit. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this band on much larger stages soon.

Kicking off a night filled with excellent music Aloke got things off on the right foot, setting the intensity level to ten with their uncompromising, subtly beautiful hardcore. The power this trio generates must be experienced live to be fully appreciated:
