The Onion Society For The Preservation Of Alcohol will continue its triumphant run in Brooklyn when, on Wednesday, September 6, the Society meets at The Brazen Head in Boerum Hill. The libation of honor will be Beefeater gin. Did you know Beefeater was created by John Burrough in 1820, himself a second-generation Society member? Don't try to look it up. You won't find it anywhere. The Society has never been capable of keeping accurate membership records what with all the secrecy and poor candlelight in the early days.
The Society will buy your Beefeater gin drinks from 7-9 p.m. (while supply lasts).
Must be 21+.
If you plan to attend the Society meeting, please RSVP to nypromo@theonion.com with "Society" in the subject. Your friends are invited, too.

A last minute fill in for Aeroplane Pagent, Brooklyn rockers Slowlands played an impressive sampling of tracks from their latest release “Never Was There a Town”. The set was mostly more down tempo, melodic, indie rock with a heavy Americana influence but there were some moments where the songs would build allowing the band to rock out a bit. This band is worth a listen if you enjoy groups such as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah or Tapes N’ Tapes.
Dallas, TX rockers the Hourly Radio continued their month long residency at the Annex with another excellent set of goth influenced indie-rock. They’re playing their final night of this residency at the Annex on Thursday 8/31 and are definitely worth checking out for anyone into similar bands like Stellastarr or Editors.
These ladies are touring all over the world promoting their new release “Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking?”. The Like was pretty impressive live overcoming some technical difficulty early to put on an entertaining show for the packed back room of the Mercury Lounge. If you can imagine Eisley (minus the guys) with a bit more punch – you’d be pretty close to the Like’s look & sound. Seems like the press is paying attention - this show may have topped the Arctic Monkeys record for most photographers I’ve ever seen at the Mercury Lounge. The Like’s off to the UK next.
I've been hearing good buzz & meaning to catch Vietnam live for a while now but due to scheduling conflicts it just never panned out. Looks like I've been missing out because these guys ripped it up at the Mercury Lounge. If you can imagine the sound of 70's southern rock mixed with the Velvet Underground's less experimental moments you'd be pretty close to what Vietnam sounds like. There were lots of good tunes but "Priest, Poet, & The Pig" is particularly outstanding. Catch these guys in a small room while you can.
Vietnam is playing in Brooklyn on September 22, 2006 @ Union Pool

Hectic day today, but tonight's looking promising. I'm hittin' up a few of spots on the LES early then some friends are throwing a party @ Tonic where a few interesting bands are playing. Then over at the Annex, word on the street is the Dirty Pretty Things are playing @ midnight (50% chance this won't happen – but if it does it's on!). Probably also headed to the BPM Mag Party late night. I'm out of the city after tonight 'till next week but these should be good on Thurs, Fri, Sat, & Sun
The stories of the Libertines demise are greatly exaggerated. Sure the band is dead, but the individuals have powered on and there are now three ex Libertine bands touring and performing excellent music(Babyshambles, Razorlight, & Dirty Pretty Things). The debut albums by all three were uneven; mixing instant hits with more forgettable tunes, but for my money DPT's "" is the best of the lot.
A proper follow up to the Dirty Pretty Things, I cut across town to catch a last second surprise show by rising NYC via the UK stars the Primms. I had heard good buzz about these guys but I had no idea - this band absolutely killed. Most impressive was the range Andy, Adam, Rob, & Gav showed with some of the songs being more straightforward catchy rockers, while others were more sweeping, spiraling up into the epic Muse/ Radiohead territory. Definitely catch the Primms during their upcoming residency @ Pianos.
Nobody loves concert photography more than me. I've been doing it since I was a kid & I think it's cool how the web has made it easier for people who love music to form communities & take control of the media though blogging, poster art, online zines, etc. but particularly concert photography. When you go to any large concert these days, between the camera phones and the point & shoots, there’s a camera everywhere. That's cool as long as you're considerate of the scene & the people around you. The key is to try to be as unobtrusive as possible. What's not cool is bulldozing your way through the crowd with a giant Ansel Adams camera and standing directly in front of people who paid and waited to see the music and then when you're called out for your rudeness trying to pass yourself off as a "Professional Photographer" (as some jerk did to me last night at the DPT's show).
No time for too much typing much today but I’m off to pregame for the Dirty Pretty Things at the Bowery Ballroom tonight. Should be good, the ex Libertines never disappoint (although it seems Carls doing a one-armed bandit thing these days). Also, word on the street is they’re doing a free show late night with Die! Die! Die! and Levy at the Annex. This is a must see if it’s actually happening (says on Levy’s mySpace the show is cancelled).
glad these great shots are not paired with pics from the sonic youth set, opening up yet another unecessary debate. Not surprisingly, other blogs (ok the vegetarian one esp.)are filled with all types of pro sy, and anti yyy spewings, set off by supposedly misleading headliner info. All the complaints from sy fans is probably a lot more whine, whine, whining , than that from the actual bands, when it was suggested to them they alternate opening for eachother. It was fair and fun enough for everyone. Enough said.
